Rua Amaro Mesquita - From the beginning of my block
The busy end. Starting at Avenida Salgado Filho
There’s the Karaoke Bar: paredes amarelas, cantores funestos, uma mesa de sinuca.
O homem enorme: his stomach spilling over elastic rimmed shorts sleeping inside of
the Blue and White store with a counter.
I have no idea what they sell.
The guy with long hair and glasses sells espetinhos through gray coaled smoke.
Milton's barber shop reminds me of my Grandfather.
Camisas vermelhas, caixas quadradas e motocicletas...
The Expresso Moto Cooperativa.
A sign is propped in the middle of the street: garage: beneath
the hammock-draped patio of shirtless boys.
The new pizza place just moved in.
More hammocks filled with students swing back and forth.
My Thursday restaurant: fans propped on purple walls.
Israel greets me as I pass…
A lunch for seis reais.
My building in the background.
The grey doves fly into the abandoned lot.
Tile-roofed houses
Kids on bikes
Students, families, retired people
My neighbors sit on white, plastic chairs.
They enjoy the night breeze.
A "Vai com Deus" as I pass by
Antonio, always out in front of his house
Leaves me with a "boa noite, tarde, bom dia... Sarah"
There's a puddle of water that grows when it rains.
Amaro Mesquita, entre Salgado Filho e Rui Barbosa.
Do começo da minha quadra
O lado mais movimentado
A minha via ladeada de casas
O caminho que eu faço quando chego
Quando saio.
Enfim, a rua onde eu moro hoje
